This former hunting ground of Kings is now a protected park to observe Bengal Tigers and many other mammals and birdlife.
Ranthambore National Park is perhaps the best known of India's national parks, located in in Sawai Madhopur District of Rajasthan on the Aravalli and Vindhya hill range. It is one of the finest places to view wild animals, particularly the Bengal Tiger. The park area is vast, covering an area of about 400 square kilometres and gained the protection of conservation initiative "Project Tiger" in 1974; it has been recognised as a national Park since 1981.
Ranthambore National Park was established as a royal hunting ground and there are many reminders of past kings. There are many lakes in the park, which provide relief during the extremely hot summer months for the animals. A huge fort, after which the park is named, towers over the park on top of a hill and is a must see attraction. There are many ruins of bygone eras scattered all over the jungle, which give it a unique, wonderful and mixed flavour of nature, history and wildlife.
The Bengal Tigers at Ranthambore National Park have been known to even hunt in full view of human visitors. Bengal tigers are famous for being seen in the daytime, due to their lack of fear of human presence in vehicles. This makes a safari in Ranthambore one of the best chances to observe a Bengal Tiger. The park authorities make great efforts to preserve the existence of this incredible animal while at the same time supporting the local villages that live within the park. It is a fine balance.
Other mammals you will see in the park are leopards, simbar deer, Jungle cats, striped hyenas, sloth bears, indian wild boar, jackals, black bucks, indian foxes, common palm civets, Rufoustailed Hare, Chinkara, Desert Cats, Hanuman Langurs. There are also over 200 species of birds to observe.
The park is open from October to May each year - we recommend visiting anytime during these months. The best way to enjoy the park is on an 4x4 safari vehicle, particularly in the early morning as the wildlife is waking up. We can advise on the best options which include exclusive safaris for photo enthusiasts. There is also an excellent selection of luxury lodges and hotels near to the entrance of the park.
